What Are You Reading? Day 7, Part 2

Kelvin reads Collected Poems by Philip Larkin

I have this book too. I must admit I don't understand everything I have read. But what I have read, including what I don't really understand, have an effect on me. This is one of Kelvin's favourite books. (I noticed the shiny leather shoes that Larkin is wearing in the book cover. You probably can't tell from my painting here. And he got one of the most troubled-looking faces.)

What Are You Reading? Day 7, Part 1

Kelvin reads Improvisation by Derek Bailey

To me, Kelvin is a master of improvised music. I have seen him walk into a recording studio and just played. I am not sure if he needed to read a book on Improvisation.

I bet this book isn't talking about techniques at all, maybe more an attitude towards life. Or maybe more about the history and forms of improvisation in different kinds of music. I will need to read the book myself.

What Are You Reading? Day 6

My father had little education, although he used to work as a shipping clerk when he was younger.

He did not know the English language, but read and wrote simple Chinese.

He lost his speech in the last few years of his life. No one knew why that was so.  Maybe it was his dementia.

Anyway, I decided to read him the calendar one day, in Teochew.

After several numbers he suddenly joined in, to everyone's surprise. His favourite numbers were 6 and 9.

He started reading the calendar with us since that day. But he would get tired easily each time we read with him, and could manage maybe 20 numbers the most.

Here is my father, on the wheelchair, after a meal, wearing his cotton gloves which prevented him from tearing his paper-thin skin with his fingernails, reading the calendar. My mother was beside him reading with him, but she is not in my drawing.

argon (sound collage)

recorded for Season 513 of the Ukulele : The Periodic Table here are the sounds I used: airplane flying past, with wah-wah effect; metal-cutting noise from a few units above my flat; opening and closing of a wooden drawer; soprano ukulele, 2 tracks, with reverb; baritone ukulele with slight reverb; finger running over plastic hair comb; wooden frog percussion; breathing. the footage is a public domain video with a water mark across the centre which I cropped out, slowed down a lot, saturated until coloured pixels are visible, and added a bit of retro effect.
